The Breakdown of Our Rhythms
Everywhere we look the natural rhythms of the universe, are crumbling. Life goes on in all its magnificence, and yet we all have an inkling, do we not, that things have gone awry?
Cycles, come and go. Rhythms come and go. But the greatest existential rhythm floundering before our eyes is climate adjusting. Humanity is affecting the natural rhythms of our planet. It’s entirely natural.
Humans are developing a separateness from nature. Superficially people want more nature in their lives — they want to live in nature, but I don't want to live with Nature. It's a conundrum and it's creating the world we see now all around us.
Take the current planet wide disappearing insect act. This is obvious from scientific and anecdotal evidence.
I look at the rainforest where I live, and notice a distinct lack of insects. It’s astonishing. Where have they all gone? The colourful large beetles, the moths, the butterflies, bees, praying mantis’, stick insects. There seems to be plenty of ants. Maybe they like this new world.
Let’s face it, humans don't much like insects. We love bees, butterflies, some colourful moths, but that's about as far as it goes. Ants swarm, flies are annoying, wasps sting, cockroaches — say no more. Creepy, crawlies annoy people. The unconscious behaviour of humanity is to rid ourselves of these pesty little things. And that's what we are doing on a colossal scale.
It’s this war against nature that is creating the climate adjustments we are facing.
As these natural rhythms breakdown, there will be huge geographical movements of people. Consider this: in South and East Asia, around three billion people rely, to varying degrees, on a regular monsoon. A monsoon that has enabled agriculture to flourish and humans to thrive. Evidence suggests that this pattern, this regular rhythm of the Asian monsoon is breaking down and becoming more violent. Three billion people is huge.
I don’t like climate catastrophising. No good vibes wallowing in that. But I like to be aware. I like to understand how nature works; how the planet works. I find it fascinating.
If you are like me and you live on the planet (some don’t seem to, which is why I like to clarify such things) then we need to accept the changes taking place. This is not only on an ontological level but also on a practical level. We need to come to the scientific understanding that it’s likely too late for the human species to change their ways.
This suggests we’re going to be pushed around with the changing rhythms. Where does one escape to? Remote places where it’s not too hot are probably best. But everyone will want to go to the obvious places.
What to do. Well, every day we can wake up and say to the world, I love you. I love you and your new rhythms. I embrace the way things change.
I believe that by affirming this, you will get the most out of this glorious life. Naturally, things will move through your day, in and out of balance, but you will less likely be shunted around all over the place.
It’s by embracing that equanimity within ourselves, we begin to truly understand nature and its rhythms.
For the love of our planet. Keep on.
